MONTREAL – The Native Women’s Shelter has been looking for a van for over a year.

The people running it are hoping that this Christmas season, the generosity of the community will put an end to that search.

Without a van, transportation to addiction clinics and facilitating visits back home is all the more challenging.

The shelter’s director, Nakuset, said the last van was destroyed in an accident.

“If we had the van back, it would be amazing,” she told Global News.

In the stairwell of the Native Women’s Shelter, the pictures of nine women are featured.

They represent success stories – people who have overcome adversity with the help of the organization – Native women who have come from abusive relationships or who are dealing with addiction come to the shelter for support.

Margaret Chittspattio lived in the shelter years ago to escape an abusive relationship.

“It’s not easy being a single mother,” she said.

Her picture is one of the nine portraits.

She said that she wouldn’t be where she is today had it not been for the support she received there.

She visited the shelter on Friday to pick up Christmas gifts for her children and reiterated how vital transportation is to the shelter’s functions.

Chittspattio  said a new vehicle would mean so much to this organization that does so much for a vulnerable community.
